Volcanic Degassing (Geological Society Special Publication) (No. 213)

Geological Society Publishing, "Volcanic Degassing (Geological Society Special Publication) (No. 213)"
Geological Society of London (January 1, 2003) | English | 186239136X | 420 pages | PDF | 42.21 MB

Humans have long marvelled at (and feared) the odorous and colourful manifestations of volcanic emissions, and, in some cases, have harnessed them for their economic value. The degassing process responsible for these phenomena is now understood to be one of the key factors influencing the timing and nature of volcanic eruptions. Moreover the surface emissions of these volatiles can have profound effects on the atmospheric and terrestrial environment, and climate. Even more fundamental are the relationships between the history of planetary outgassing, differentiation of the Earth's interior, chemistry of the atmosphere and hydrosphere, and the origin and evolution of life.
This book provides a compilation of 23 papers that investigate the behaviour of volatiles in magma, the feedbacks between degassing and magma dynamics, and the composition, flux, and environmental, atmospheric and climatic impacts of volcanic gas emissions.

Tectonic, Magmatic, Hydrotherma, & Biological Segmentation at Mid-Ocean Ridges (Geological Society Special Publication)

Tectonic, Magmatic, Hydrotherma, & Biological Segmentation at Mid-Ocean Ridges (Geological Society Special Publication) By C. J. Macleod
Publisher: Geological Society of London 1996-11-01 | 258 Pages | ISBN: 1897799721 | PDF | 6 MB

We now recognize that mid-ocean ridges are not simple, two-dimensional features, but are instead partitioned into morphologically distinct segments on a variety of scales. Variations in axial morphology reflect differences in the structure of the magma reservoirs and in the nature of mantle upwelling beneath the ridge. Segment ends may be starved of magma, and spreading accommodated by tectonic stretching as well as by magmatic accretion. The location of the magmatic heat source and the distribution of permeability within the segment strongly control the geometry of seawater circulation in the crust and locus of hydrothermal discharge. In turn, the mechanisms of faunal colonization of vent sites and the evolutionary history of vent organisms depend strongly upon the spatial distribution of black smoker vents and the hydrodynamics of dispersal of the vent fluids. Segmentation, therefore, plays a vital role in the inter-relationship between all tectonic, magmatic, hydrothermal and biological processes at mid-ocean ridges. The recent research presented in this book, much of it carried out under the aegis of the British mid-ocean ridge 'BRIDGE' programme, examines this inter-relationship with the aim of furthering our understanding of the causes and consequences ofridge axial segmentation.

Modern Ocean Floor Processes and the Geological Record

Modern Ocean Floor Processes and the Geological Record (Geological Society Special Publication) By Robert A. Mills
Publisher: Geological Society of London 1998-12-01 | 303 Pages | ISBN: 1862390231 | PDF | 24 MB

This volume considers the geological processes at and biological colonization of, deep ocean spreading centres from both a modern, for example Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the East Pacific and the South West Indian Ridge, and an ancient perspective, such as in the UK, Cyprus, Turkey, Greece and the Urals. The book is one of the first attempts to bring together researchers from disciplines as diverse as geophysics and biology studying modern active hydrothermal systems and the fossilized remains of long-extinct hydrothermal systems that are now locked in the geological record.By using new knowledge of how hydrothermal systems function we can aid the understanding and prediction of mineral deposits now found on land.

The Future of Geological Modelling in Hydrocarbon Development - Special Publication no 309
Geological Society of London | January 15, 2009 | English | ISBN: 1862392668 | 225 pages | PDF | 7.95 MB

The 3D geological model is still regarded as one of the newest and most innovative tools for reservoir management purposes. The computer modelling of structures, rock properties and fluid flow in hydrocarbon reservoirs has evolved from a specialist activity to part of the standard desktop toolkit. The application of these techniques has allowed all disciplines of the subsurface team to collaborate in a common workspace. In today's asset teams, the role of the geological model in hydrocarbon development planning is key and will be for some time ahead.

Myth and Geology - Special Publication no 273 (Geological Society Special Publication)

L. Piccardi and W. B. Masse; Editors, "Myth and Geology - Special Publication no 273 (Geological Society Special Publication)"
Publisher: Geological Society of London | 2007 | ISBN 1862392161 | PDF | 346 pages | 13.4 MB

This book is the first peer-reviewed collection of papers focusing on the potential of myth storylines to yield data and lessons that are of value to the geological sciences. Building on the nascent discipline of geomythology, scientists and scholars from a variety of disciplines have contributed to this volume. The geological hazards (such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and cosmic impacts) that have given rise to myths are considered, as are the sacred and cultural values associated with rocks, fossils, geological formations and landscapes. There are also discussions about the historical and literary perspectives of geomythology. Regional coverage includes Europe and the Mediterranean, Afghanistan, Cameroon, India, Australia, Japan, Pacific islands, South America and North America. Myth and Geology challenges the widespread notion that myths are fictitious or otherwise lacking in value for the physical sciences.

Muslim World League Press | 1992 | ISBN: 0962723622 | 57 pages | PDF | 5 Mb

The study presented in this publication attempts to identify some of the relationships between recent findings in the field of geology and the meaning of some passages in the Qur'an. Some of these passages, which were revealed about 14 centuries ago, expressed certain geological facts, and it is only through some of the most recent geological findings of this century that these facts have become scientifically recognized. Other passages which contain indications of geological concepts are analyzed for additional details and explanations in this field.

The information in this study should be of great interest to both the Muslim and non-Muslim. It serves to strengthen the faith and to encourage the development of more scientific knowledge, and it adds a new dimension and perspective to geological research.
Author is considered an eminent scholar in the field of geology and has many publications, as well as participation in numerous conferences in his area. In this particular booklet, he analyzes in great detail a number of findings in geology and applies them directly to the understanding of Qur'anic passages which refer to the same subject.
The reader will find this material to be greatly stimulating, interesting and inspiring.

Continents and Supercontinents

The Boundaries of West African Craton

The Boundaries of the West African Craton - Special Publication no 297 (Geological Society Special Publication)Publisher: Geological Society of London edition 2008 PDF 536 pages 18,7 mb

The boundaries of rigid cratons can be affected by subsequent orogenic events, leading to 'metacratonic' characteristics not often properly recognized and still poorly understood. Major lithospheric thickening is absent and early events such as ophiolites are preserved; however, metacratonic boundaries are affected by major shear zones, abundant magmatism and mineralizations, and local high-pressure metamorphism.

Applications of X-ray Computed Tomography in the Geosciences

Geological Society Publications, "Applications of X-ray Computed Tomography in the Geosciences (Geological Society Special Publication) (No. 215)"
Geological Society of London (January 1, 2003) | English | 1862391394 | 243 pages | PDF | 23.17 MB

X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a technique that allows non-destructive imaging and quantification of internal features of objects. It was originally developed as a medical imaging technique, but it is now also becoming widely used for the study of materials in engineering and the geosciences. X-ray CT reveals differences in density and atomic composition and can therefore be used for the study of porosity, the relative distribution of contrasting solid phases and the penetration of injected solutions. As a non-destructive technique, it is ideally suited for monitoring of processes, such as the movement of solutions and the behaviour of materials under compression. Because large numbers of parallel two-dimensional cross-sections can be obtained, three-dimensional representations of selected features can be created. In this book, various applications of X-ray CT in the geosciences are illustrated by papers covering a wide range of disciplines, including petrology, soil science, petroleum geology, geomechanics and sedimentology.

Theoretical Geochemistry

Theoretical Geochemistry: Applications of Quantum Mechanics in the Earth and Mineral Sciences
By John A. Tossell, David J. Vaughan

Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA | 528 pages | 1992-03-19 | ISBN: 0195044037 | English | PDF | 20.57 MB

This work is based on the observation that further major advances in geochemistry, particularly in understanding the rules that govern the ways in which elements come together to form minerals and rocks, will require the application of the theories of quantum mechanics. The book therefore outlines this theoretical background and discusses the models used to describe bonding in geochemical systems. It is the first book to describe and critically review the application of quantum mechanical theories to minerals and geochemical systems. The book consolidates valuable findings from chemistry and materials science as well as mineralogy and geochemistry, and the presentation has relevance to professionals in a wide range of disciplines. Experimental techniques are surveyed, but the emphasis is on applying theoretical tools to various groups of minerals: the oxides, silicates, carbonates, borates, and sulfides. Other topics dealt with in depth include structure, stereochemistry, bond strengths and stabilities of minerals, various physical properties, and the overall geochemical distribution of the elements.

Early Palaeozoic Peri-Gondwana Terranes: New Insights from Tectonics and Biogeography

M. G. Bassett, "Early Palaeozoic Peri-Gondwana Terranes: New Insights from Tectonics and Biogeography"
Geological Society of London | 2009 | ISBN: 1862392862 | 288 pages | PDF | 11,9 MB

Following the late Neoproterozoic - early Cambrian breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia, Gondwana evolved as one of the principal continental masses on Earth, embracing most of South America, Africa, Australasia, Antarctica, much of western Europe and parts of Asia. Around its margins were various other terranes that had varying tectonic and biogeographical affinities with the main continental block. This book incorporates a series of reviews and multidisciplinary research papers that together explore the tectonic, palaeogeographical and palaeobiogeographical evolution of the elements that made up the peri-Gondwanan collage. The stratigraphical scope of the coverage embraces the late Precambrian through early Devonian, providing a comprehensive overview of structural, stratigraphical and biological evolution through this significant interval of Earth history. Integration of these various processes throughout the volume will be of broad-based interest to a wide range of geoscientists.

The Role of Women in the History of Geology

The Role of Women in the History of Geology: Special Publication no 281
Publisher: Geological Society of London | ISBN: 1862392277 | edition 2007 | PDF | 352 pages | 10,6 mb

Where were the women in Geology? This book is a first as it unravels the diverse roles women have played in the history and development of geology as a science predominantly in the UK, Ireland and Australia, and selectively in Germany, Russia and US. The volume covers the period from the late eighteenth century to the present day and shows how the roles that women have played changed with time. These included illustrators, museum collectors and curators, educationalists, researchers and geologists. Originally as wives, sisters or mothers many were assistants to their male relatives. This book looks at all these forgotten women and for the first time historians and scientists together explore the contribution they made to this male-dominated subject. There are individual profiles on remarkable women: Catherine Raisin, Dorothea Bate, Cuviers daughters, Grace Prestwich, Annie Greenly, Nancy Kirk, Margaret Crosfield, Ethel Skeat, Maria Ogivlie Gordon, Marie Stopes, Anne Phillips, Muriel Arber and Etheldred Bennett. Pulling together this extensive research uncovered common issues and generated emergent themes. The Editors have brought this new research together under these themes and tried to answer the question Where were the women in Geology? They go on to discuss how these role models can be applicable to todays society.

Enchanted Rock: A Natural and Human History

Lance Allred, "Enchanted Rock: A Natural and Human History"
University of Texas Press | 2009-09-01 | ISBN: 0292719639 | 352 pages | PDF | 58,1 MB

With intriguing domes of pinkish granite surrounded by a sea of Hill Country limestone, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area attracts over 300,000 visitors every year who come to the park to hike, rock climb, spelunk, camp, picnic, and observe birds and wildflowers. Geologists from around the world come to Enchanted Rock to examine landforms that were shaped by forces on ancient continents of Earth more than one billion years ago! All of these visitors, however, are only the latest comers in a line of human history that stretches back 13,000 years to early Native Americans and includes Spanish explorers, Mexican and German settlers, and thirteen private and public owners up to the current owner, the state of Texas.

Surprisingly, given the area's wealth of unusual geology, native plants and animals, and human history, no comprehensive guide to Enchanted Rock has been published before now. In Enchanted Rock, you'll find everything you need to fully appreciate this unique place. Lance Allred draws on the work of specialists in many fields to offer a popular account of the park's history, geology, weather, flora, and fauna. Whether you want to know more about how Enchanted Rock was formed, identify a wildflower or butterfly, or learn more about plant communities along the hiking trails, you'll find accurate information here, presented in an inviting style. Over a thousand color photographs illustrate the enjoyable text.

Science of Everyday Things: Real Life Earth Sciences

Judson Knight, Neil Schlager, "Science of Everyday Things: Real Life Earth Sciences"
Gacl | 2002 | ISBN: 0787656356 | 400 pages | Djvu | 11 MB

From Booklist
The first two volumes of this series are Real-Life Chemistry and Real-Life Physics, released in 2001. The purpose of the series is to explain scientific phenomena using common real-world examples. Real-Life Earth Science has about 40 entries covering various scientific phenomena and principles. Information in each entry includes "Concept" (defines the scientific principle or theory), "How It Works," "Real-Life Applications," and "Where to Learn More." A "Key Terms" section defines terms from the text. Examples of topics include study of the earth, geology, geomorphology, soil science, geochemistry, and meteorology. Under "Real-Life Applications" we can learn about the greenhouse effect (under Ecosystems and ecology); mass extinction (under Paleontology); and the 1812 New Madrid, Missouri, earthquake (under Seismology).

Entries, written at a level accessible to high-school students and the general reader, average about 10 pages in length. The "Where to Learn More" section provides about 10 books and Web sites for further information. Black-and-white line drawings and photographs supplement the text. There are no color illustrations. An index offers subject access to the contents of the volume; in addition, there is a cumulative subject index of all 4 volumes. The basic facts provided in these books are available elsewhere, but the "Real-Life Applications" may be interesting to some. Recommended for high-school and public libraries. RBB

Topics covered include: the pioneering stratigraphic studies of the eighteenth-century naturalist Francq van Berkhey; the 1863 geology lectures of Staring and his geological map of the Netherlands; the Maastricht Cretaceous finds in the emergence of Dutch vertebrate palaeontology; and the founding of ground water hydrology in the Netherlands.

Early Earth Systems: A Geochemical Approach

Map That Changed the World CD: William Smith and the Birth of Modern Geology
HarperAudio | ISBN: 0694525219 | 2001-08-01 | MP3 | 176 MB

Once upon a time there lived a man who discovered the secrets of the earth. He traveled far and wide, learning about the world below the surface. After years of toil, he created a great map of the underworld and expected to live happily ever after. But did he? Simon Winchester (The Professor and the Madman) tells the fossil-friendly fairy tale life of William Smith in The Map That Changed the World.

Born to humble parents, Smith was also a child of the Industrial Revolution (the year of his birth, 1769, also saw Josiah Wedgwood open his great factory, Etruria, Richard Arkwright create his first water-powered cotton-spinning frame, and James Watt receive the patent for the first condensing steam engine). While working as surveyor in a coal mine, Smith noticed the abrupt changes in the layers of rock as he was lowered into the depths. He came to understand that the different layers--in part as revealed by the fossils they contained--always appeared in the same order, no matter where they were found. He also realized that geology required a three-dimensional approach. Smith spent the next 20 some years traveling throughout Britain, observing the land, gathering data, and chattering away about his theories to those he met along the way, thus acquiring the nickname "Strata Smith." In 1815 he published his masterpiece: an 8.5- by 6-foot, hand-tinted map revealing "A Delineation of the Strata of England and Wales."

Despite this triumph, Smith's road remained more rocky than smooth. Snubbed by the gentlemanly Geological Society, Smith complained that "the theory of geology is in the possession of one class of men, the practice in another." Indeed, some members of the society went further than mere ostracism--they stole Smith's work. These cartographic plagiarists produced their own map, remarkably similar to Smith's, in 1819. Meanwhile the chronically cash-strapped Smith had been forced to sell his prized fossil collection and was eventually consigned to debtor's prison.

In the end, the villains are foiled, our hero restored, and science triumphs. Winchester clearly relishes his happy ending, and his honey-tinged prose ("that most attractively lovable losterlike Paleozoic arthropod known as the trilobite") injects a lot of life into what seems, on the surface, a rather dry tale. Like Smith, however, Winchester delves into the strata beneath the surface and reveals a remarkable world. --Sunny Delaney
